What is Numismatics?

Numismatics is “the study of the physical embodiment of various payment media” (i.e. currencies).

proof coins, uncirculated coins, bullion coins, or other coin specifically designated by statute as a numismatic item,

The value and price of numismatic items, especially coins, depend more on the date, condition, rarity value, connection to history, aesthetic attraction and mint mark of the item, rather than its face value. Typically, rare or ancient coins can trade for amounts far in excess of the value of the metal from which they are made.

For the purpose of this article, we will concentrate on numismatics as it applies to coins.

History

The history of numismatics dates back centuries from the time that currency was first invented. However, prior to the 19th Century, coin collecting tended to be an individual hobby, mostly partaken off by nobles, the religious elite, and rulers. During the Roman Empire, for example, emperors like Caesar Augustus collected coins from various places to use as leverage in trade negotiations and to offer as gifts to important guests.

The Renaissance period of the 15th and 16th centuries – a time that saw the transition from the Middle Ages to modernity –  saw an explosion in coin collecting. At that time Europeans were fascinated with the materials and collections of prior civilizations, with particular interest in the coins that showed engraved images of animals, mythical gods and goddesses and rulers.

Over time, numismatics became increasingly popular and by the 1800s, numerous coin-collecting organizations, such as the New York-based American Numismatics Society had been founded. Renowned institutes across the globe are now serious, professional collectors and holders of valuable numismatic objects, with, for example, The Smithsonian Collection in the United States recognized to hold one of the largest in the world, with more than 1.6 million objects in its collection.

Since, the advent of the Internet has attracted an even broader audience of coin-collecting enthusiasts who now have access to endless information, tools, and numismatic communities.

The Numismatist

A Numismatist is a professional who collects, analysis, and assesses the quality of collectible coins, currency, and other like objects.

Numismatics is now a recognized profession that can be studied at universities that offer both graduate and post-graduate courses. Other options include courses provided by institutes such as The American Numismatic Association (ANA) and the United Kingdom’s Money and Medals Network.

In 1955, the Professional Numismatics Guild (PNG) was founded in order to uphold integrity and confidence in the art of numismatics. It is a non-profit organization composed of many of the United State’s top rare coin and paper money experts who undergo a background check, must adhere to a strict code of ethics in the buying and selling of numismatic items and who guarantee the authenticity of the numismatic merchandise they sell. Membership is only offered on an individual basis to professional numismatists who can meet this rigorous set of ethical and financial standards.
