The Austrian Mint is releasing a very special coin, made from the old copper roof of the Parliament building in Vienna. On October 14th The small piece with a big history is presented in Innsbruck.
INNSBRUCK. On the occasion of the upcoming reopening of the parliament building on Vienna’s ring road, the local mint is bringing an extraordinary example onto the market. What is unique is the origin of the material. The 5 euro coin is made from the copper of the former roof structure of the parliament building and therefore has the fitting name “Democracy”. From October 12th, the limited edition of 200,000 pieces will be available in financial institutions and the Austrian Mint in exchange for 5 euros for 5 euros and will be sent on a roadshow throughout Austria. In Innsbruck on October 14th. the coin was presented at Sillpark.
“We have placed the renovation of the parliament building under the leitmotif of opening up,” explains Parliament President Wolfgang Sobotka , “and just as we invite people to visit us in the House more often in the future, thanks to the Austrian Mint we will also bring a piece of that Parliament, a piece of democracy, so to speak, to the people.”
Designed with nine corners as a reference to the nine federal states, the “Democracy” coin shows an image of the parliament building and three heads in profile and en face, symbolizing the entirety of the people. And what is conveyed in the image is also immortalized in text: “Austria is a democratic republic.
