Description
Commemorative coin and medal from Lamphun Province, 4 cm in size, guaranteed authentic by the Royal Thai Mint, Department of the Treasury.
The Provincial Seal features the stupa at Wat Phra That Hariphunchai. The origins date back to 897 when the King of Hariphunchai built a stupa to enshrine a hair of the Buddha. The current compound, established by Hariphunchai King Athitayarai, dates to 1044. The temple was rebuilt in 1443 by King Tilokaraja of Chiang Mai’s Lanna kingdom, with its pyramid-shaped Chedi Suwanna constructed in 1418. Renovations were made in the 1930s by the northern Thai monk Khru Ba Sriwichai.
Queen Chammathewi was the first ruler of the Hariphunchai kingdom, now Lamphun. Numerous monuments and historic sites honor her legacy, but the statue in Lamphun is the most visited by locals for prayers. Her remains are believed to be enshrined at the nearby Wat Chammathewi, though it is less popular for worship compared to the statue.
